The AGG Fondation 2007 Scholarship Awards was sucessfully held on at the Metropolitan Club, Victoria Island, Lagos. The occasion was chaired by Mr Tunji Haffner.
Twenty-five female students from various secondary and tertiary institutions were selected to receive this year’s scholarship award. 18 of the students were in their second, third and fourth year in University while the other 7 students are from secondary and vocational schools.
Chief Anofi Guobadia, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, stated that “the qualifying criteria for prospects are that they be brilliant and indigent female students.”
With respect to the focus on female students, Chief Guobadia said "women were clearly less advantaged in comparison to men in our society. He pointed out that Grace, his late wife, who was the first female dental surgeon in Nigeria, was herself a beneficiary of government scholarship in both her secondary and university education, in Nigeria and United Kingdom. This, he said, informed her initiating the programme in the year 2000, to give back to society some of what had been given to them.
The Chairman of the occasion Mr Tunji Haffner asked other public spirited Nigerians and government bodies to emulate the AGG Foundation by aiding less-priviledged but brilliant students through scholarships and other forms of assistance.
Community Tasks Guobadia Foundation
The people of Umuokele Community in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State have commended the activities of the sponsors of Guobadia Scholarships. They have also asked the sponsors of Anofi and Grace Guobadia Foundation to provide social amenities for their area.
The Indigenes made the call under the auspices of Umuokele Welfare Association, Lagos Branch, a body that oversees the welfare of Umuokele community. According to them Umuokele Community lacks access roads and potable water. At the moment their only source of water is a stream that the community shares with livestock.
All efforts to get the local governement to provide these ammenities have failed. Which is why they have implored the Anofi and Grace Guobadia Foundation to come to their aid, by sinking a borehole in the community. This will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the community.
